League Announces Group Riding CurriculumPartners with the MS society for launchFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington, D.C.—September 30, 2006—The League of American Bicyclists has partnered with the National MS Society to launch a group riding curriculum that will train ride leaders and participants in group-riding-specific skills. The training is based on the League’s renowned BikeEd program, and is specifically tailored to group rides. The group ride training was originally developed by LCI Bill Edwards, with assistance from LCI Preston Tyree, for the BP MS 150 Houston to Austin Bike Tour in 2003. It was fully implemented starting in 2004. This program has led to an increase in safety awareness among bike tour participants and an annual decrease in rider-related medical transports. "We would like to see a continued decrease in our medical transports" said Barry Turner, director of development for the MS Society's Lone Star Chapter. "We believe that our partnership with the League will promote and continue rider education and increase the riders’ cycling knowledge and skills as they prepare for and participate in the MS 150 Bike Tours." In 2006, the training was pilot-tested at MS Bike Tours in Orange County, Calif. and San Antonio, Texas. “As a past participant, ride leader and marshal, I know how important education is to safety on the road,” said League Board Member Preston Tyree. “I am excited to be working with the National MS Society to take the lessons we’ve learned in Houston and disseminate them nationally.” As of November 2006, the packaged training is available to all League Cycling Instructors.
