Our Board of Directors
Hans is a bicycling activist, and an active bicyclist. Recently elected Board Chair of the League, he is also co-founder and Board Chair of Pennsylvania Walks and Bikes, and Board member and past President of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia. He has a Governor’s appointment to the PA Pedestrian and Pedalcycle Advisory Committee, was a citizen member of the regional transportation planning committee, and co-founded his local township Sidewalk, Trails, and Paths committee. He uses these platforms to help make a difference. Before retiring, Hans was Partner of a multi-million dollar international consulting practice, received numerous achievement awards, and was the first to commute by bike to corporate headquarters. He has led and enjoyed biking across USA, in Canada and Europe. His stable includes a Bike Friday for errands and transit-based travel, a recumbent for touring and a mountain bike for thrills.
Tim Young has helped plan, design, fund, construct and manage people-powered transportation and recreation facilities for more than 20 years. He recently served as the Executive Director of Friends of Pathways, a bicycle, pedestrian and trail advocacy organization based in Jackson, WY – a Gold Bicycle Friendly Community. He was the first Pathways Director for Teton County from 1992-2002, where he started the pathways program and developed complete streets and trails programs for Jackson Hole. From 2002 until 2006, Tim was an Assistant Regional Director for the National Parks Conservation Association and co-lead NPCA’s transportation efforts for bicycling and alternative transportation in the National Park System including Grand Teton National Park’s major new pathway system. Tim’s advocacy background includes helping form the Alliance for Biking and Walking, and he served on the first Bikes Belong Advisory Board. Tim is an adventure cyclist at heart and has completed many noteworthy tours, including bicycling around the world on the 7-year, 45,000-mile Too Tyred Tour expedition from 1980-87. He lives in Wilson Wyoming.
Eric Swanson joined the Board as Treasurer in March 2008. He has previously served as vice-president of the Washington Area Bicyclists Association and is a member of the Arlington (Va.) Bicycle Advisory Committee. In his professional life, he is an economist and statistician at the World Bank, where he is also spokesman for the World Bank Staff Bike Club (which has over 300 members and more than 700 registered bike commuters). A lifelong bike commuter, he and his wife tour widely on their tandem.
Brull is serving his second term as Region 5 Director, now serving on the Executive Committee as Secretary. He has enjoyed the opportunity to get involved with bicycle advocacy at the local and national level. At the operational level, he has assisted in the League's reorganization. Currently, Brull is transitioning from his day job of more than 30 years as an industrial/organizational psychologist and spending time in his new home in Salida, Colo. (discovered on Ride the Rockies and Bicycle Tour of Colorado). He has also managed to put a few miles on the bike. The last three years have included three tours across Colorado, three Death Rides, Paris-Brest-Paris and year-round commuting (in Minnesota). Brull is enjoying serving with his talented and dedicated colleagues on the League Board.
Albert is an avid bicycle commuter, indoor cycling instructor, and recreational cyclist. She currently serves as President of the Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico (BCNM) and is an LCI. She is a registered patent attorney with a PhD in Materials Science. Her solo Intellectual Property law practice is located in Albuquerque.
Brustin has been an avid cyclist for more than 45 years. His first road bike was a Schwinn Varsity eight speed. Fortunately, he’s upgraded his equipment over the years and rides at least three times a week. He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1971, and earned his law degree at Hastings College of the Law in 1975. His passion for cycling has also shaped his professional career. Approximately 15 years ago he decided to transform his law practice from general personal injury cases to a specialized cycling practice. Today his entire caseload involves cycling related matters. In his spare time, he acts as a volunteer attorney for various racing clubs and advocacy organizations. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the California Bike Coalition, the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, and the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates Advisory Committee. Durrant is principal at Alta Planning + Design in Portland, Ore., a bicycle commuter, a long-distance cyclist and a licensed landscape architect specializing in bicycle facilities. For more than 30 years he has planned, designed and built cycling, pedestrian and greenway facilities throughout the U.S., and encouraged communities to include active transportation modes in the fabric of community life. His project experience includes award-winning urban trails (such as the Cedar Lake Regional Trail in Minneapolis and the Spokane River Centennial Trail in Washington), citywide bicycle plans, planning for bicycle sharing programs and urban design for light rail transit systems. Durrant possesses expertise in community and agency planning, and non profit organizational development. He was recently appointed to the board of the Mississippi River Trail and is a long-standing executive board member of The Waterfront Center, an international nonprofit organization that promotes public access to urban waterfronts around the world. As a longtime commuter and League Cycling Instructor, he understands the issues and opportunities associated with integrating urban cycling innovation into state, regional and community bicycle plans — an understanding that reflects his knowledge of cycling and its role as a vehicle for community change.
Fox is President of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, and she has spent the last three years leading strategic planning for a global foundation focused on climate change. Prior to that, Fox worked on energy-efficiency policy development, assisting local governments in the transportation, solid waste, and energy sectors. Fox was awarded a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Service Medal for work on the Puna Geothermal Facility and California air quality implementation plans. She has worked domestically and internationally to apply science in resource conservation policy, including research as a Fulbright Scholar in New Zealand. Fox is a bike commuter, bike tour leader, and bike advocate, and has B.S. and M.S. degrees in environmental engineering from Stanford University.
Executive Director of the nonprofit Community Cycling Center in Portland, Ore., Graves works every day to broaden access to bicycling and its many benefits. She works collaboratively across disciplines, including community health, transportation policy, social justice, and education to encourage people who ride to be informed, involved, and engaged.
David Madson, a resident of Berkeley, is a Senior Development Officer with California Pacific Medical Center Foundation. He has previously served in senior development positions with the University of California and California State University systems and his alma mater, the University of Minnesota. David recently completed serving eight years on the board of Hostelling International: USA. Madson is a member of Grizzly Peak Cyclists and aspires to a double-century one day.
Matt Moore, Moore serves as the General Counsel at Quality Bicycle Products, and is on the Board of the Bicycle Products Supplier’s Association (BPSA) where he is Chair of the Legislative Committee. He is president of Minneapolis Off-Road Cycling Advocates (MOCA), and director of Nice Ride Minnesota, the Twin Cities’ bike sharing system. He received his law degree with honors from Hamline University in St. Paul and also holds degrees in philosophy and history from St. Olaf College. He and his family have lived and biked in Minneapolis for more than 25 years.
Nix has been riding since the early '70s, and became a League Cycling Instructor in 1981--#51! During the 1980s he coached for the United States Cycling Federation. He and his wife have owned Liberty Bicycles in Asheville, N.C. for the past 30 years. He currently serves as president of the National Bicycle Dealers Association.
John Siemiatkoski is an Enterprise Solutions Consultant with Blackbaud, Inc. He helps non-profit organizations implement and manage their Web sites, online giving and social media. John has extensive experience in non-profit organizations including The ALS Association, the American Diabetes Association and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS). He also volunteers as the President of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition (MassBike). John got involved in bicycling advocacy while managing charity rides at NMSS. Seeing many charity riders who lacked the bicycling experience to have a truly safe and enjoyable ride, John became a League Cycling Instructor, and has since taught over 450 students. While at NMSS, John increased revenue from his chapter’s bicycle tours from $1.4 to $2.6 million. As a charity ride consultant, John has advised Boston’s Hub on Wheels. John plans to help the League create a comprehensive development plan. John serves on the Board’s Development (Chair), Education (Vice-Chair) and Nomination committees.
Gail Spann is the past Chair of BikeTexas as well as a founding board member of BikeHouston. She is also an advisor and member of BikeDFW. Gail has directed many rides such as the famous Houston Moonlight Ramble, The Bluebonnet Express Metric Century and the Lancaster Rally. She directed the "Mother" Ride of Silence at White Rock Lake for four years and served on the board of the ROS and continues to Mentor for the organization. She is the past president of the Woodlands Cycling Club and has served on many local club boards such as the Greater Dallas Bicyclists. Spann served on the board of the Texas Mountain Bike Race Association for six years and raced both on and offroad for many years. She is the past president of WOMBATS for Houston and had developed a large women's offroad race team when with NWCC with over 40 members. Gail raced for the Singletrack Sisters and NWCC as well as PACC of Dallas. She is a League Cycling Instructor and teaches on a regular basis. Spann Chairs the Education Committee and serves on the Life Trust, Governance and Development committees.
Winter is Executive Director of Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, where she oversees the organization’s fundraising, membership, marketing and board development, as well as supervising educational offerings, programs and advocacy work. She has a degree in Environmental Studies and Physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz and was recently honored as one of 100 Women of Influence by the Silicon Valley/San José Business Journal. |
